About the Book:  In this fourth book in the new My Weirdest School series, the students of Ella Mentry School are learning about fire safety. Mrs. Meyer of the local fire department has been brought in to teach the students, but she is the weirdest safety expert in the world. She likes fire just a little too much. Will Mrs. Meyer catch on fire? Will she retire? What will transpire?

Perfect for reluctant readers and word lovers alike, Dan Gutman’s hugely popular My Weird School series has something for everyone. Don’t miss the hilarious adventures of A.J. and the gang.

  • Age Range: 6 – 10 years
  • Grade Level: 1 – 5
  • Series: My Weirdest School (Book 4)
  • Paperback: 112 pages
  • Publisher: HarperCollins (February 16, 2016)
  • Cost: $4.99

My Review: In this series of My Weirdest School #4. A.J  and his gang are back, and its all about birthdays and fire. But how are the two related? Well, its crybaby Emily’s birthday, and A.J isn’t happy to spend the whole morning in Mr. Cooper’s class being nice to her. While Emily was trying to blow out the candles a few was still alight, So A.J decided to help her blow out the remaining candles but he blew so hard that one of the candles fell off the cake and landed on Emily’s shirt. “Call the fire department!”

Mr. Copper grabbed the fire extinguisher and aimed it at Emily’s shirt and her cake as well.  Not only is her shirt ruined, but her cake as well. Emily started crying, “This is my worst birthday ever!” she shouted.

The next day the principal decided to bring Mrs. Meyer of the local fire department to teach the students about fire safety.

Would the students learn anything or would everything go up in smoke? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

The illustrations by Jim Paillot help to makes the story hilarious. I highly recommend
this book.

Book Review/Giveaway: When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Good Person! Ends March 5th

When I grow up

Book Review: Blake and Brendan would do almost anything to get out of going to Mr. Becket’s funeral. It will be boring and sad-and dead people are scary! There might even be ghosts! But Mom and Dad insist. Mr. Becket was a good person, and it is right to gather with his family and friends to remember him and all the good things he did. So what’s so good about remembering a dead person? A lot. Readers learn with Blake and Brendan what it means to be a good person and all the ways a good person makes a difference in people’s lives, even long after they’re gone.   http://whenigrowupbooks.com/

  • Series: When I Grow Up…
  • Paperback: 50 pages
  • Cost: $10.95

My Review: After their mom insisted that they go with them to attend Mr. Becket’s funeral, Blake and Brendan found out how important Mr. Becket was to the people and the community.

They learnt how Mr. Becket cared for those who could not stand up for themselves. That he mentor young men, coach different sports, he taught kids how to deal with winning and losing and how to do both gracefully. The boys also learnt that Mr. Becket not only helped people but animals too. They notice that Mr. Becket was liked a lot. They wonder if they can be as good a person as Mr. Becket when they grow up.

This is an inspirational book for children to learn how to be responsible in learning how to help others. The illustrations are bright and bold which helps tell the story.

At the end of the story is a short story about The Elephant and the Blind Man.

Book Review/Giveaway: When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia. Ends Nov 16th

25934090

When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia by Toby Haberkorn

About the Book: With the increasing numbers of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other dementia conditions, more families and children will experience the sadness and challenges of this disease in a beloved relative or friend. When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia explores the difficult reality of dementia and the enduring strength of a nurturing relationship between a granddaughter and her beloved Grammy.

  • Paperback: 38 pages
  • Publisher: Baypointe Publishers (March 21, 2015)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0991623606
  • ISBN-13: 978-0991623600
  • Cost: $12.95 @amazon

My Review: Dementia is a decline in memory and other thinking skills that could be severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. The tend to forget names, places, among other things.

Grandmothers love spending time with their grand children. But when they suffer from dementia they tend to forget things, like people’s name, taking their medicine, misplacing things like car keys, even remembering to hug their love ones.

Children wouldn’t understand that their beloved grandmother’s memories are fading. With this book they will understand what dementia means and how they can help their love ones if they ever suffer from this disease.

The author tells the story of a child’s relationship with her grandmother.  Her Grandmother was always there to pick up her up from school, she loves reading to her granddaughter, helps her at her lemonade stand, she brings back dolls for her granddaughter every time she travels to famous places. Her granddaughter places nuts, chocolates and candies on the table for her grandmother and her friends who loves playing bridge every Wednesdays. And she loves the hugs her grandmother gives her. But due to dementia the role has changed as the child now hugs and guide her grandmother. She takes her out for a walk since she no longer drives, she reads to her while grandma turn the pages.

My friend’s mom suffers from Alzheimer. When I visit her she keeps asking me “who are you?” And I will say, ” Mom, its Ella”. She will say, “Oh, how are you?”. 10 minutes later she will ask me the same question.

This book is not only about the relationship between a grandmother and her grandchild, but a child’s perspective on Dementia. I will recommend this book in school libraries. The illustrations by Heather Varkarotas helps bring the story to life with bright and bold colors.

About the Author: Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio Toby Haberkorn was a voracious reader. Later, as a young mother, she delighted in creating stories for her children. Toby currently lives in Texas, where she is working on her next book.

Toby has written two children’s books. With the increasing numbers of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other dementia conditions, more families and children will experience the sadness and challenges of this disease in a beloved relative or friend.

Parents assume that children do not notice when something is wrong with a beloved family member or friend suffering from dementia. They may be unsure how to explain this disease or the deterioration. The reality is that children are very observant and worry when a grandparent’s behavior changes or seems to have disappeared from their lives.

When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia seeks to address those concerns by sensitively exploring the changing relationship between a granddaughter and her adored Grammy who has dementia. The story is inspired by the Toby’s own family, which was forced to confront the pain of a no-upside, ultimately progressive disease in their beloved mother and grandmother.

Dementia is an adult topic but this book is written in a simple, straightforward manner that children can understand. When My Grammy Forgets, I Remember: A Child’s Perspective on Dementia stimulates discussion between parents and children about compassion and this debilitating disease. Toby’s hope is to help children and parents find the peace they deserve at bedtime. http://tobyhaberkorn.com/

Is It Time to Say Goodbye?

Is it time to say goodbye?

I have asked myself that question for the last year and a half. Why? Because I have notice the number of viewers/followers has decreased. The number of people taking part in the giveaways has dropped that I don’t think it’s fair to the authors/publishers to find out only a few comments about their books.

So I have decided to get rid of the giveaway program. I know that a few dedicated followers leave their comments on books whether there’s a giveaway or not and I will like to say a big thank you and that I’m very grateful.

Since I’m still behind in reviewing a few books, the giveaway program will last until the end of July 2016. It will be up to the authors/publishers if they want their books to be given away. Only then will I do a giveaway.

For the love that I have for books, I will still keep the blog running to only spotlight the author/book. If any author/publisher still interested please click on the link for more information. https://mymcbooks.wordpress.com/request-book-spotlight/

I would like to say a big thank you to all my followers for their support and lovely comments about their love for books. Thank you for being a part of this blog. I will, once in a while surprise you with a free book. So watch out for my email.

Even without the free giveaway, please help support the authors by leaving a comment about their book when posted.

Thank you

Ella

Book Review/Giveaway: And in the Morning: Field of Conflict – The Somme, 1916. Ends Apr 14th

and-in-the-morning1

And in the Morning: Field of Conflict – The Somme, 1916 by John Wilson

About the Book: Fifteen-year-old Jim Hay believes that war is a glorious adventure and cannot wait for his turn to fight. But as his father boldly marches off to battle in August 1914, Jim must be content to record his thoughts and dreams in his journal. All too quickly, however, Jim’s simple life begins to unravel. His father is killed in action, his mother suffers a breakdown and, when he does at last join up, it is as much to find refuge as it is to seek glory. What Jim discovers in the trenches of France is enough to dispel any romantic view of the war. Soon, his longing for adventure is replaced by a basic need to survive and the final tragic outcome is one he never could have imagined. The first installment in the Fields of Conflict series, “And in the Morning” will appeal to young readers aged fourteen to sixteen.  http://www.wanderingfoxbooks.com/and-in-the-morning/

My Review: A story about a young man’s life fighting for survival.  He couldn’t wait for his turn to go off to war and fight. After his father was killed in action and his mother suffering a breakdown. Jim decided it was time to join the fight. But his views about the war wasn’t what he taught. He wrote in his journal  the horrors of the war and the loss of innocent lives. Now he must fight to stay alive long enough to return home.

John Wilson

About the Author: I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, but I grew up on the Isle of Skye (I could speak some Gaelic when I was four), and in Paisley, outside Glasgow. I was troubled teen and only applied myself in high school when someone said I couldn’t do something. One time I was in the Principal’s office for some forgotten reason, and he said I would never amount to anything. That annoyed me and I set out to prove him wrong, (was he smart?). Anyway, I went to St. Andrews University and did an Honours Degree in Geology. I worked in Zimbabwe, but there was a war on, so I came to Alberta and worked in Edmonton for ten years. I started freelance writing in 1989 and moved out to Vancouver Island in 1991 to write full time.  Read more about the author http://johnwilsonauthor.com/page5/page5.html
