Poodle & Doodle by Donna J. Shepherd and illustrated by Jack Foster.

About the Book: Angel, a twelve-pound prissy poodle, is none too happy when Leah brings home Scruffy, a seventy-five pound clumsy Labradoodle. Why ever would Leah want another pet when she had the perfect dog already?

My Review: Angel couldn’t understand why Leah would bring home another dog. Her question was, “I’m a fancy poodle pup. Am I not dog enough?” She just could not understand why Leah needed a dog like Scruffy that gobble down his dinner while she takes small bites, or drink out of the toilet or roll around like a mutt in wet and weedy grass; this dog shows no doggie class at all (funny). But she discovers that there may be a reason for keeping him around after all.

Some children find it hard to accept change for example; they can feel overshadowed by a new friend or a new baby. But the lesson in this book is about friendship and how to adapt to change.

Whether you love dogs or not Poodle and Doodle is a cute story that children and adults will find funny. The beautiful illustration done by Jack Foster helps bring the book to life with its bright and bold colors. I highly recommend this book for you children home library and for classroom teaching.

  2. My grandson would love this. Their neighbors have a poodle and he lights up like a Christmas tree whenever he sees it but panics if the poodle tries to approach him. 🙂 Commented on Interview. GFC name is Lucky47.

  4. Okay, I’m a dog lover and grammie to a 13 lb prissy Malti-poo so when I saw this book I had to read all about it! My grand-daughter LOVES books, loves dogs (especially Toby, her Malti-poo “big brother”) so this is a must have! I love that the story is humerous but packs a valuable lesson in friendship and adaptation. Not only that, but the title alone just makes me smile! Thanks for the chance to win this!

  10. My 3 grandkids are at a stage (please let it just be a stage!) where every thing has to fair & evensteven, or we face an argument or meltdown. Poodle & Doodle can teach them a lesson about handling their jealousy & emotions. I love the title & cover.

  13. Logan’s parents have a dog that looks almost like a poodle. We will probably get Riley a puppy for his 4th birthday. I would love to have this book for him, I like to read to him before he goes to bed at night I think this or any of the books you have illistrated would be great for him.

  15. Oh WOW! this sounds like a great book! I do daycare out of my home and whenever I have a baby here my son gets so jealous he’s only 15 months so he doesn’t quite understand that i just need to hold the baby to make her happy for a little while and then i can hold him.. We would like to have another one soon but with him being so jealous I worry it will be worse when we have another one.. Would love to be able to read it to him to help him understand its ok if mommy hold other babys..

  18. This is a wonderful lesson about jealousy that children as well as adults can use. We have a blind poodle (Otis – yes awful name but he came with it), which was big adjustment for our family as well as our first pup Grace.

  19. Sounds like a perfect book to share with my nephew and niece who have recently welcomed a new baby sister to their household. My twins and I would also enjoy reading it. We are big fans of Donna Shepherd’s “Topsy” Tales”, especially “Chizzy”. Jack Foster’s illustrations in “Poodle and Doodle” look delightful. Would love to have the privilege of reading this picture book to little ones.
