Book Review/Giveaway: The Phony Farkleberry #1. Ends Jan 31st
The Phony Farkleberry (Twisted Oak Amateur Detectives #1) by Michael Scott Miller
About the Book: When a painting by legendary artist Thomas Farkleberry is stolen from the art gallery where Tyler’s mother works, Tyler’s mind races to the whispered conversation he overheard on the night of the big gala. But when his mother dismisses Tyler’s suspicions, he and his friends, Melanie, Amanda, Tubby, and Dontrelle, decide to take the investigation into their own hands. Can they crack the case before their parents discover what they are up to?

My Review: The author, Michael Scott Miller, does a good being descriptive in each chapter of the book to enable young readers understand the story. I also like the diversity in the main characters which is needed in more stories for our youth. A mystery develops when a forgery is discovered at the local art museum. The schoolmates turned detectives set out to solve the mystery. Each friend utilizes their unique strength to help. There was several questionable methods in which some of the kids gathered information to solve the mystery, like hacking into the network. Overall, a good story.
FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.
About the Author: Michael Scott Miller says there is no greater compliment than when his readers say they became emotionally invested in his characters.
Michael found the inspiration for his first novel, Ladies and Gentlemen…The Redeemers, from the talented but poor musicians that stake out territories and collect change from passersby in the subways of Philadelphia. This story of a band, cobbled together from down-and-out musicians, has been described as “a lesson in persistence, perseverance, salesmanship, and faith,” and as “a fun, feel good story.”
In Michael’s second novel, The Book of Sylvia, a city girl from London and a priest in rural England confront their inner demons as they attempt to solve a mystery together. This novel has been described as “a journey of self-discovery cloaked in a mystery,” and “a wonderfully fun tale.”
Following these two novels, Michael decided to pursue a dream of creating a book series for children. This creative journey led to the release of the first three books in the Twisted Oak Amateur Detectives series. Along the way, Michael developed a deep bond with his characters–Amanda, Melanie, Dontrelle, Tubby, and Tyler–and he is excited about taking them on more adventures. Exciting to have a new mystery series (?) for students to enjoy. My 4th graders are always looking for new books to read. Do you know what the guided reading level is?
Comment by Colleen | January 12, 2015 |
Hi Colleen! The books are targeted to children ages 9-12. In fact, my mother was a fourth grade teacher and I recall, as a child, reading all the books that she used in her classroom (The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, A Wrinkle in Time, to name a few). Writing is my way of giving something back to the reading the community. Thanks for your interest!

I like the seeing the kids on the cover of the book…and interesting/neat that one is wheelchair bound….I think that itself will be a help in teaching kids to accept all kinds of people…and nice that it’s going to be a series…to keep kids interested over a long period of time.
