Book Review: Nina the Neighborhood Ninja

About the Book: Nina’s a girl who takes charge. She uses her brain and her muscles to complete rescue missions. She doesn’t mind getting dirty and climbing trees. It’s all part of the life of the everyday girl superhero. Young readers are encouraged to recognize that the traits of being smart, strong, and speedy exist within themselves. Young girls will find this book to be a positive affirmation that they too can be superheroes.

My Review: Nina is a little girl known as the neighborhood Ninja.  She dresses up like a superhero and rescues those in need. With her amazing qualities, and with the help of her sidekick, Fiona they spend the day thinking about resourceful ways in helping others.

When she hears a bird in distress she investigates, she goes out of her way to build shelters for animals. The animals love her for she is not only smart, but she is strong and speedy.

I enjoyed reading this book and everyone should have a copy for their young ones. The message from this book is about caring for others. This book not only inspire children but has a positive message for young girls and boys.

The illustrations by Hazel Quintanilla are bold, colorful and bright. Great for home and school library.

About the Author: Sonia Panigrahy (Pah-Nee-Grah-Hee), is a public health professional, world traveler, adventure seeker, and fitness enthusiast. She believes that life is too short to be bored!

Nina the Neighborhood Ninja was created out of Sonia’s lifelong love of reading. As her family and friends begin to have children, she looked forward to sharing this love with them. She believes that books are a powerful way to empower impressionable young minds.

Sonia was surprised that she could not find books for girls ages 3-6 years that realistically identified females as intelligent, physically tough, brave, and adventurous. She was disappointed that girls continue to be excluded from the heart of the superhero story.

After unsuccessful attempts to find a young girl superhero protagonist on the pages of a book, especially one of color, she gave up. Then she created her own.

Book Review and Giveaway: Zapato Power Freddie Ramos Takes off. Ends Sept 4th

Zapato Power: Freddie Ramos Takes Off written by Jacqueline Jules and illustrated by Miguel Benitez

One day Freddie Ramos comes home from school and finds a strange box just for him.  What’s inside?

My Review: Freddie was trying to find out who left him a mysterious package with no return address but a note that says ‘Zapato Power for Freddie Ramos’. Was the mysterious package from his uncle Jorge inNew York? But uncle always sends funny cards with his gifts and there was no card in the box but a pair of purple sneakers with silver wings on the side. Later that day Freddie found out that the sneakers wasn’t from his uncle or his mother.  But Freddie was happy because he was ready to be a hero.

The positive thing about this book is that Freddie decided to use his new-found powers for good. He was eager to use his new power to help his friends and save the day. By using his super speed he was able to pick up forgotten lunches and library books.

The mystery is who sent Freddie the purple sneakers and would he figure it out in the end?  An interesting read for early chapter readers.
