Book Review/Giveaway: The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook. Ends June 7th

Five Cats

The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook by Joanne Rocklin

About the book

In this warmhearted middle-grade novel, Oona and her brother, Fred, love their cat, Zook (short for Zucchini), but Zook is sick. As they conspire to break him out of the vet’s office, Oona tells the stories of his previous lives, ranging in style from fairy tale to grand epic to slice of life. Each of Zook’s lives have echoes in Oona’s own family life, which is going through a transition she’s not yet ready to face. Her father died two years ago, and her mother has started a relationship with a man named Dylan—whom Oona secretly calls “the villain.” The truth about Dylan, and about Zook’s medical condition, drives the drama in this loving family story. http://www.abramsbooks.com/Books/The_Five_Lives_of_Our_Cat_Zook-9781419705250.html

My Review:  If you are a cat lover you would want to read Five Lives of Our Cat Zook. This touching story tell about a 10 years old girl who watched her father die of cancer and is still grieving for him, her beloved cat is now sick and the only thing she can do is tell stories to Fred to keep him happy.

Oona and her brother Fred found Zook the cat in an alley while they were eating lunch from O’Leary’s. They took the cat home and their mother agreed that they can keep him. Zook left ill and they took him to the Good Samaritan Veterinary Clinic and was told that Zook’s kidneys are failing. Oona notice that her brother was very sad, so to make him happy she told him that cats have nine lives inside them. They have the ability to come back to life. But we know cats don’t actually have nine lives. So Oona went on to stretch the truth and tells Fred stories about their cat Zook’s previous four lives. This book will be emotional for cat lovers. A well written story by the author.

Book Review: Some Cat! Written by Mary Casanova

Some Cat! By Mary Casanova and illustration by Ard Hoyt

About the Books: Violet has always imagined ruling a kingdom with sharp claws and velvet paws, so when she is adopted and goes to live with two dogs, she immediately takes over with a Meowww! Hisssss! and Spat! Poor George and Zippity try to befriend Violet, but they get nowhere. One afternoon, while her new family is out fishing, Violet is awakened by some stray dogs who chase poor Violet into a corner. Luckily, George and Zippity arrive home just in time to help. http://www.marycasanova.com/

My Review:  This is a story about an adopted cat name Violet. Before she was adopted Violet knew she was meant for more, she was meant to rule a kingdom, with sharp claws and velvet paws.  Kept in a shelter she would arch her royal fur when anyone stops by to look at her, but they moved on and chose a tiny kitten instead.

Finally, Violet gets adopted by a man and woman and took her home. The moment she stepped into the house, she quickly shows their two dogs George and Zippity, who is in charge. She wasn’t friendly at all.

This is a cute story about the difference in animals learning to get along and be friends.  And a good story for every family. Sometimes we do need the help of others for no man is an island.

What a great illustrations by Ard Hoyt combining watercolor and pencil to bring this story to life.

Book Review and Giveaway: Bingo’s Big Adventure. Ends Sept 14th

Bingo’s Big Adventure written by Julia King

This is Bingo, the newest cat on our farm. Bingo’s Big Adventure is a children’s book which tells the story of this cat’s first outing to the world around our home. Bingo is a kitty adventurer and has a day exploring the new sights and smells of the great outdoors. He meets another cat who lives on the property and encounters a domineering rooster. He sniffs, watches, and learns about his new world in this story. The story of Bingo’s Big Adventure is told from his point of view and the text is accompanied by vibrant photos showing Bingo in action. His encounters with the other animals on the farm are illustrated through full color prints which beautifully exhibit his new life and adventures.

My Review: Bingo is an adopted cat and Julia King describes the world Bingo lives in through his own eyes. Bingo is curious about his environment and goes out exploring the farm on which he now lives. He founds out first that there are no dogs. “Hmm… I think my life is going to be fun” said Bingo. On his adventures, he met Jimmy the cat for the first time, chickens and a mean looking rooster named Danish Leghorn.

The photographs are amazing and stunning. After you have read the story you will keep turning the pages over and over again. I like that this book encourages children to explore their surrounding. They never know what they will find.

Interview with Alice Seagren

Biography

I’ve had a lifelong love of cats. I was raised as a farm girl in the Pacific Northwestand at one time owned 14 cats and every one of them had an individual personality. Just try keeping 14 cat names straight in your head!

I now have just 2 cats but my love for them continues. Jasmine is our purebred Persian and rules the house and of course Macy, who was my inspiration for the book! Macy is a Heinz 57 that we adopted at the pet store and is inquisitive and packed brim full of energy.

Growing up, my vision was to become a veterinarian someday. That never materialized but animals remain very special to me in my heart. Later in life and 4 children later, I was able to share my love of animals with my children.

It was this sharing experience that motivated me to write children’s books about the adventures of Macy the Cat. What better way to share my love with animals to children throughout the world.

Thank you very much for reading and I’m sure you will enjoy and be inspired by the adventures and upcoming sequels of Macy the Cat.

I would also like to note that I will personally sign the first 500 copies sold of this very first edition of Macy the Cat.

Lastly, my grateful appreciation to my illustrator, Ted Cobb and by web designer, Rick Debnam at opt-e-web.com for their support and endless efforts.

Interview with Alice Seagren Author of The Adventures of Macy the Cat

I want to thank you for being my guest here on Mymcbooks Blog.

What is the last book you read?

This is the first book.

What were your earliest memories of writing?

I enjoyed writing books since I was in grade school. I always had something to write about.

I was always writing about various adventures and giving my books to my mother.

Were you encouraged to write or was it something that came natural?

I was not encouraged to write. I always had ideas and creations for books.

Are you working on a new book?

Yes. The next book is called: Macy the Cat Goes to School. It is written but not yet illustrated. Very funny story.

What do you do when you’re not writing or promoting your books?

I am actually a real estate agent.

How did you come up with each characters?

I had a vision of what I wanted to see and worked with my illustrator.

If you had the opporunity today to become a veterinarian would you have gone down the writer’s road?

Yes. This is a good question. When I graduated from school, I wanted to be a veterinarian but my parents could not afford to put me through college. I love cats and the real Macy, (my cat) is so funny, that I decided to actually publish a book. I love animals. Not matter my occupation, I would still be writing.

Have you ever suffered from writer’s block?

No. I always thought of adventures to write about.

How do you react to a bad review?

I can take criticism. In fact, that actually helps me.

Who are some of your favorite authors you would love to dine with?

Darryl Davis who writes about real estate.

What advice would you give parents on selecting the right books for their children to read?

The story and the wording.

What advice you would give to new writers?

If someone is writing for children, use vivid colors in the illustration and make sure you run the book by an editor.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

If you have always wanted to write a book…..start now!
