Book Review: The Best Part of a Sauna by Sheryl Peterson
The Best Part of a Sauna by Sheryl Peterson
About the Book: A youngster is enjoying a summer evening with Grandma and Grandpa at the family lakeshore cabin. From gathering kindling, to building the fire in the old sauna stove to taking a traditional Finnish sauna, this book includes all the memory-making parts of a typical summer night on a north woods lake. It’s a book to be enjoyed by all generations.
About the Author: Sheryl Peterson grew up in the farming region of southern Minnesota. Now she lives “Up North” on the MN/Canadian border where long winters make good writing time. Sheryl was a elementary reading and writing teacher for many years before becoming a full-time writer.
She is the author of 22 non-fiction books for middle grade readers. The Egyptian Pyramids, Empire State Building, and dinosaurs are some of her subjects. Her twelve books on U.S. states received a starred review from Library Media Connection. She’s also happy to announce that her first picture book will be out soon.
Sheryl enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for writing at young author conferences and school visits. When she’s not writing or reading, Sheryl likes to ski, swim, take saunas, and travel.
My Review: This is a fun story about a boy and his reason for being in the sauna. While at his grand parent’s cabin, he couldn’t wait to go to the sauna. He goes into the woods to gather dry twigs, fallen tree bark and birch branches to take to the little house where the sauna is. While he stuffs the stove with kindling, his grandpa lights the stove. While they waited for the sauna to get hot they decided to do some activities.
For him, building the fire was fun. Being warm and toasty was not the best part of a sauna. Waiting for it to get hot wasn’t the best part of a sauna. Loving a chilly swim was fun, but still not the best part of a sauna. The best part of a sauna for him was snuggling between his Nana and Gramps.
Interesting read! It also gives a belief description of sauna in the last page of the book. The illustrations by Kelly Dupre help tell the story.
FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from Raven Production in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.
