S is for Smiling

A New Take on ABCs! S Is for Smiling Sunrise An Alphabet Book of Goodness, Beauty, and Wonder by Vick Wadhwa

About the Book: This fun and educational picture book is for young learners – toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, early readers, and also for their young at heart parents and teachers! Along with reinforcing the alphabet, the book has been carefully designed to help improve vocabulary, comprehension and music skills through meaningful sing-along rhymes and colorful illustrations. The rhymes are enjoyable to sing-along, and support character development by focusing on positive words and concepts. Age Range 3 and up (Preschool and up). A free song version of the rhymes (mp3 audio file) is available at, along with teaching tips. Mama Marlaine, founder of Parenting 2.0 and creator of The Life Skills Report Card, reviewed the book and said, Smiling Sunrises colorful illustrations, creative rhymes, and life-affirming messages are soul-nourishing, wholesome food for growing minds!

My Review: What a great concept. If you are looking for a new, simple, and effective way to teach your child the alphabet, then pick up a copy of S is for Smiling Sunrise. Kids would learn new words that would increase their vocabulary. And like the author states “it’s time to go beyond “A for Apple” and “B for Ball”. This book not only improves their vocabulary but helps with comprehension.

For example, “P is for Park and Playground. Places to have fun, Sit and watch, or go walk, hop, skip, jump, or run!”

V is for Virtues – Goodness in your heart. Caring, sharing and honesty. Learn well and be smart!”

This book is engaging and fun for kids and their parents with easy-to-sing along alphabet rhymes. The illustrations are bright and colorful and I highly recommend this book.

Ages: 3-8

Pages: 32

FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.

 Vick Wadhwa

About the Author:  Vick Wadhwa’s first book (A New Take on ABCs – S is for Smiling Sunrise) was inspired by his toddler daughter, when he sensed that she was getting bored with her alphabet books, and was ready to learn some new words and concepts. Generally of a somewhat quiet and reserved nature, he managed to surprise himself and his family by coming up with a collection of fun (yet meaningful) rhymes, and then again when he tweaked the verses for singing, much to his child’s delight. Although he had never before considered writing a children’s book, he started having so much fun teaching the rhymes to his daughter that he had the urge to share with others.

Vick has a scientist background, with 20+ years experience in the fields of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. He lives with his family in Southern California, and is now dreaming up his next children’s book.

  1. I like the ‘positive attitude’ aspect of S is for Smiling Sunrise. Too often we think that little ones don’t have any stress in their lives, but they do, and reading this book together would be a great way to help relieve a little of that stress.

  4. I can’t tell you how nice it is to see abc books with more meaningful vocabulary and learning experiences for children. I love that it is a rhyming book. They are such a pleasure to read to toddlers and the kids love it too and are more attracted to the rhymes.

  5. I love how this book pushes the young ones to learn. The first few years are when the kids are able to learn so much more than people traditionally give them credit for. They are little knowledge sponges and can learn things quicker than people whom are older. I love how “virtue” is being introduced at such a young age-not only can they understand the concrete examples but young children can grasp the abstract as well. And the front of the book is a smiling sunshine radiating happiness. I don’t think this book could have gotten much better.
