The Goodwill Vultures Club

The Goodwill Vultures Club. A Day of Heroes by Author HuGH wILLARD

About the Book: Roberta, who prefers to be called Rob, is a gentle spirit and often misunderstood by people who don’t see beyond her outward appearance. “Heroes for the Day” is the story of Buzz and Rob who learn that even an ugly, ailing bird is capable of bringing life and happiness into the lives of others.

My Review: When 10 year old Buzz Steward came across a wounded vulture while camping with his dad and brother he took the bird home and nurse it back to health. The Vulture became his best friend and he named her Roberta, Rob for short. Buzz formed a club with his pet friend Rob and two dogs

When Buzz’s friend PeeWee told him about a commercial about the Animal Hero’s contest, Buzz decided to enter contest with Rob since the contest is about how animals deeply impact the life of someone. Buzz and Rob seem to be a good candidate, since his parents’ divorce he had been so up set till he found Rob.

But some people in his community were quite antagonistic toward Buzz and his avian friend. People do not like vultures because they are not attractive as parrots and they eat dead animals. So why would he have a disabled ugly looking vulture as a pet? While others see the vulture as ugly, others see her as inspiration and joy.

This story teaches us not to treat people differently disabled or not.

  1. I love the message that this book is sending. I think self esteem & acceptance of others is one of the most important characteristics we can instill in children. We are all different & we are all important.

  2. I love stories with a moral and learning to love others as they are and befriending them and not seeing or treating them differently because of who they are or how they look or their family problems, I love books for my granddaughters and i also have been reading them and enjoy them, I want to read more about Buzz and Rob

  3. My grandson (named Rob, coincidentally) is a bird lover and he would enjoy this story. I think the aspect of looking outside your own troubles and caring for something or someone that needs your help is a great lesson for all.

  4. Ella, I’m a fan of vultures, big ol’ misunderstood birds that they are. I’m glad to see one get the starring role in a kids’ book with a message (of all things) of inclusion!

  5. This sounds like and intriguing and sweet read🙂. I’m glad this has a lesson to it, as most books today either teach nothing or may give children the wrong ideas about things. I think it could also teach us that appearances are deceptive, which is a similar concept. Plus, I like vultures.

  7. I enjoy animal stories and one about an animal that is usually not regarded positively intrigues me. I look forward to reading about Buzz Steward’s adventures.
