Book Review/Giveaway: Toby the Pet Therapy Dog and His Hospital Friends. Ends April 7th
Toby the Pet Therapy Dog and His Hospital Friends by Author Charmaine Hammond and illustrated by Rose Anne Prevec
About the Book: Toby is a big, brown, happy dog. Every week, his owner, Miss Charmaine takes him to visit and comfort children who are in the hospital. Follow Toby the service dog for a day, and see how he makes friends with the children, helps make them happy.
My Review: Toby the Pet Therapy Dog and His Hospital Friends is based on a true story from the book and movie Toby’s Terms. This book tells an amazing story about Toby the pet therapy dog, who volunteers in a hospital once a week to cheer up sick children. Toby not only helps the children but also help the elderly. This story not only helps children to care but learn how to be kind and also encourage them to help others.
This book is fun and educational with questions at the end of the book about enhancing children’s critical thinking skills about the story. I always like illustrations that help tell the story and Rose Prevec did just that. I highly recommended this book for classroom teaching.
Note that a therapy dog is a friend to everyone! Therapy dogs are extremely patient, loving and provide great companionship.

When I read the interview with Charmaine it brought me back to when my own daughter was hospitalized and a therapy dog was used to help the children . I can tell you that my daughter loved this dog’s visits and it actually pulled her out of the depression she had during her year long hospitalization. It’s so amazing how these animals help the children. I don’t think I’ve ever heard about another book like this one and can say it’s wonderful that Charmaine wrote about Toby. I did comment on her interview.

When I saw the title of this book I had to read the review! First of all, my dog’s name is Toby, and secondly, I work with the elderly and we have a couple of pet therapy animals that come and visit. There are many seniors who have fond memories of their childhood pets, and also many who have had to give up their pets as their health failed and they’ve had to move into assisted living. These therapy pets (dogs and cats) work wonders ..even with Alzheimers patients. I would love to read this book to my grand-daughter !
Off to read the author’s interview and leave my comment there. Thanks for the giveaway!

Hi there,
I wish this giveaway was open internationally …. sigh…. Please don’t include my comment in the giveaway draw, but I did want to comment on this post. The concept of therapy dogs is unheard of in India. I am a dog lover and I know just how comforting these dogs could be. It sounds like an awesome book. Thanks for the review.

My in-laws have benefitted from in-home visits from therapy dogs. Animals are amazing in the ways they can comfort us. Toby is a great ambassador that my grandkids would love to learn more about.

This would be a great book to teach my kids about therapy dogs…they’ve seen dogs when they’ve went to the nursing home and probably don’t understand why they’re there 🙂

Thanks for the review. When I worked in Hospice we had a pet therapy dog, muffin, and i have to say that along with music therapy were the best things for my patients. I have talked many times about with my daughter about muffin and this book will really bring home what i have already told her. Thanks so much for the chance to win.

My dog is a retired certified therapy dog and was Courageous Canine 2006. I had to check out this book because I know first hand what power these dogs provide to people. I read your interview and commented on the post. Thank you so much.
