Keepsake that Educates!

Book Review/Giveaway: Open Minds. Ends Feb 18th

Open Minds by Susan Kaye Quinn.

When everyone reads minds, a secret is a dangerous thing to keep.

Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can’t read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can’t be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves. When she accidentally controls Raf’s mind and nearly kills him, Kira tries to hide her frightening new ability from her family and an increasingly suspicious Raf. But lies tangle around her, and she’s dragged deep into a hidden underworld of mindjackers, where having to mind control everyone she loves is just the beginning of the deadly choices before her.

My Review: First of all, excellent writing by Susan K Quinn.  This book is full of actions and adventures. Imagine having the ability not only to read peoples thoughts but control then as well.

The zeros in this book are known to be people who can not read minds, and Kira was considered a zero until she met bad boy Simon. When Simon told Kira that they have the same ability his words shocked her. “Did you suddenly turn into a zero?” He showed her that she isn’t a zero after all but a mindjacker. She can mindjack and make people do whatever she wants and believe what she wants them to believe. She felt like a dangerous, possibly lethal, weapon as jackers are powerful and known to be potentially dangerous. They are hunted down and imprisoned. Simon suggested that Kira join a clan of other mindjackers, but she declines, making things worse.

She soon finds herself not only in a heartbreaking love triangle, but she must also deal with the FBI and the jacker clan. What is going to happen to Kira now, will she use her new found power for good or evil? You will have to buy your copy to find out.

This is a fast paced adventure and I couldn’t wait to turn the page to see what happens next. Watch out for the sequel. I highly recommend this novel to all YA lovers.

  1. Mind control. What a fascinating concept, but also terrifying. This book could provide an opening for some very interesting discussions with children about power why they might or might not want such an ability.

  2. This sounds like a really interesting read. I mean, come on, reading AND controlling people’s thoughts? That has to be a great read. Thanks for the giveaway!

  4. Being able to control minds is such interesting theme. But I’m guessing from what I’ve read so far that it has good and bad points. Sure wish I could controll hubby’s mind…or at least get him to pick up his socks! lol

  5. After reading her interview I said I thought it was a unique storyline and I myself will read this. A Mind Jacker ..hhmmmm. Too bad when raising my 7 kids I didn’t have that ability because it sure would have been a lot quieter 🙂 Commented on interview.

  6. When i read the synopsis I was really excited, it seems like an interesting take on the whole mindreaders ida by creatinng a society filled with them, and the strange one is the person who can’t read minds. I would love to read this book some day 😀
