Book Review and Giveaway: Sleepover at Gramma’s House and Dog Parade. Ends Nov 30th

Sleepover at Gramma’s House by Barbara Joosse and illustrated by Jan Jutte

Get ready for a madcap romp at Gramma’s. The bouncy read-aloud rhythms perfectly capture the delight and playfulness of a beloved relationship. Oh. They love each other so. Granddaughter packs her nighty in her overnighty trunk and skips her way to Gramma’s. The day is off to a silly millie start as Gramma and Granddaughter put on pinky party hats and set the table fancy with a razzle and a dazzle. At the tippy-end of their sleepover day? Of course–The very best way to fall asleep is inside a hug.

My Review: “Goodie goodie goodie…I’m packing up my little trunk, my little overnighty trunk, my nighty in my nighty trunk”.

That is the sound of an excited little elephant that couldn’t wait to visit her gramma’s house for sleepover. When she finally got to her house they spent the evening running thought the paper door, having a tea party, wall painting, taking a shower, dancing on gramma’s toes and reading stories. Then they snuggled together watching the lighting in the sky. Oh. How they love each other so. This story tells of a good relationships and an expression of love a grandchild has with their grandparents. Children would love this playful rhyming story with great watercolor and acrylic illustrations by Jan Jutte.

Dog Parade by Barbara Joosse picture by Eugene Yelchin

Meet Tinkles, Gracie-pants, Lovie, Fritzie, Weenie, Walter, Comet, Ike, and Jack. It’s time for these pups to let their owners dress them up in costume! But one of them is shy. Another is too jumpy. Do any of them really want to join the fun? Once they see the duds they’re wearing, they will. One by one, these pups get on their get-up to put their best paw forward. It’s a Dog Parade!

Woof! Whatcha got there? A costune? It’s time for these pups to hurry up and put on their best duds! The dog parade won’t wait forever… and you don’t want to miss it!

My Review: Author Barbara Joosse introduces us to some of the dog breeds and their personalities as their humans get them ready for the dog parade. The dogs introduce themselves and wonder what costume they would be wearing. Slurp see himself as wonder dog as he bring the newspaper, sneakers, watch out for the baby and bring in the mail. While Fritzie sees himself in charge.

“Fritzie in charge.

All right, people. Over here. Over there.

Ready…hup! Line up!

One Two Three Four, one two three four.

Hrumph. You want me to wear…this?

Wouldn’t a uniform be more appropriate?

Medals. Ribbons. Stars. So on and so forth”.

Dog lovers and children will find this book interesting with realistic expression of the dogs by the illustrator. Interesting read!

Ages:4 and up

  1. I am always on the hunt for more books that illustrate the special relationship between Nana and granddaughter. My daughter is an only-grandchild at the moment and she treasures reading with her Nana and gets so excited about the world of reading and, of course, her Nana and Papa. We are dog-lovers as well but that Gramma book looks especially adorable! Great post, thanks!

  10. Books like this remind me of how kids get so excited about little things. As adults its easy to get bogged down in the work of the day and we forget to celebrate the little things, like a hug and a kiss, a visit to Grandma’s House, etc.

Dogs, a perennial favorite among my students. This books like a great interactive read. It would be fun to see if the students could guess the costume for each dog.

  13. OMG how adorable. Weenie reminds me of my old weenie Bailey. I’m sure it would remind my daughter as well. And Sleepover at Grandma’s who don’t like that? I know mine wish they could if only she lived closer but they settle for aunties. Thanks for the great giveaway and cute titles.
