My Monster Burrufu by Alberto Corral and illustrated by Alessandra Sorrentino

About the Book: Seven-year-old Olivia has just moved to a new house, the same house where a lonely monster named Burrufu lives hidden in a secret attic. One night, unable to resist the smell of delicious cookies, Burrufu sneaks out and is discovered by Olivia. The two soon learn that you can find friendship in the most unexpected places. ‘My Monster Burrufu’ is a story of overcoming fear, a curse, and a most unusual monster who learns from a little girl how to trust his heart.

My Review: Olivia and her dad left the big city to live in a big house in the country. In the new house Olivia felt something moved in the attic. That night while Olivia was in the kitchen she encounters Burrufu the monster. A talking monster that wears glasses and writes! It turns out that Burrufu isn’t a scary monster and Olivia couldn’t wait to befriend this monster, but he just wanted to be left alone in the attic to write his stories.

My Monster Burrufu is a well written book that would hold any child’s attention. A perfect read for children to learn the value of true friendship between two different personalities but also accepting each other and overcoming fear. This book is full of exciting adventures and I highly recommend it.

Alberto Corral was born in 1979 in the Canary Islands, Spain.

At an early age he knew he wanted to work in films somehow. He fell in love with movies, acting, directing and animation, after teaching himself to animate at home, moved toMadridfor further study. He followed his passion and became one of the most talented Spaniard animators.

After the animation school in Madrid he got his first job in Derby, Englandin 2001. That would be his first stop in many cities such as New York, London, Barcelonaor Granada. He settled down in Los Angeles working for DreamWorks Animation Studio in 2009, where he collaborated on the “Shrek Forever After” and “Kung Fu Panda 2″ success. He is now working on “Madagascar3″, due on theatres on March 2012. Alberto Corral has also worked on two films in Spain that won Goya awards, the Spanish version of the Oscars.

His IMDB page can be found at www.imdb.com/name/nm3208207/.

Living in Los Angeles allowed him to explore storytelling, his biggest passion. Since 2009, Alberto Corral has shot 3 short films as director, wrote “My Monster Burrufu”, a book has received great reviews and he is now writing his first screenplay. http://www.mymonsterburrufu.com/

Alberto Corral is the author of My Monster Burrufu

I want to thank you for being my guest here on Mymcbooks Blog

Thank you for this opportunity.

What is the last book you read?

I read “Start Something That Matters” by Blake Mycoskie. A great book of how companies should not only sell a product, but try to change the world to a better place. And as a novel, “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, another amazing book.

What was your favorite children’s book?

I don’t have a favorite book in particular. I didn’t read that much when I was a child. Readingis something that I fell in love with much later. However, I can say that when I was a child I used to love those books where you can choose your own ending. I found fascinating those stories because it made me be more protagonist and participant of the book.

What were your earliest memories of writing?

Pretty young! I think my first short story was when I was 8 years old, for my class. I remember I won a few awards in my school. I remember that it was about a European family that traveled toJapanand the kid got lost.

Were you encouraged to write or was it something that came natural?

It came natural. I never saw myself as an author, per se. I always loved creating stories and characters. That is something I was doing since I remember. But I never thought I would write a book, because I thought I couldn’t. Until I found a story that I really wanted to tell everybody.

What was your first animation before working on Shrek Forever After?

My very first job was a small animation that I did for a commercial that was played on local theaters. Years later, I got a job on video games in England. After that, I did some commercials, more video games and two movies. “Planet 51″ and “The missing lynx”, both movies won the Goya Awards for the best animated movie (the Goya are the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars).

What are the differences between working on Shrek Forever After Movie to the Kung Fu Panda 2 movie?

They are two ways to see it, Artistic and technical.
The technical part is the same, in both movies you have to do the animation, the same techniques, same deadlines, same everything.
And then, the artistic part is always different. You have to learn how they move. Shrek and Po are completely different and they behave in so many different ways. That’s the fun part. You have to learn their personalities, get to know them. For me, the biggest difference is that on Panda 2, I had move freedom to “exaggerate” the characters, as they were more cartoon than Shrek’s characters.

What inspired you to write My Monster Burrufu and will it be on the big screen soon?

I wish it will be on the big screen I’d love to see it. Actually, that was one of the reasons to write it. I wanted to see the characters on theaters. What inspired me was that I felt the need to tell everybody about these two amazing characters. I didn’t want them to just be in my head. I wanted to tell their journey and share it.

What is the most difficult part of writing?

The first page, for me is to write the first page. Starting is the hardest thing. But, fortunately, for me, once I start, it’s hard to stop. Then there are a few more difficulties, like having a good story, but that’s always something that you can work on if you had something written at the first place.

What do you do when you’re not writing or promoting your books?

Animate. Right now that’s my day job. And on my spare time, I do short films and I’m trying to finish my first screenplay. And of course, I go to my wife to enjoy life as much as I can.

How do you react to a bad review and have you ever suffered from writer’s block?

I’ve been very, very lucky. So far, I haven’t had any bad review. I had a few that weren’t great, but never bad. But I know that eventually it will happen. It’s something that you always have to have in mind, because it is impossible to please everybody. And when that happens to me, I’ll try to learn from it.

And about writer’s block. Yes, of course, I had it many times and when I suffer it I just go for a very long walk. No music, no phone, no distraction. Just a long walk, thinking and relaxing.

What do you hope that readers will take away from your book?

I hope they learn how to accept people. That they don’t prejudge anybody for their looks. And once they got their friendship, they have to do sacrifices and work on it. Don’t take it by granted.

Who are some of your favorite authors you would love to dine with?

I’m more of a movie guy. I have a long list of directors and scriptwriter I’d love to dine with. But, authors, not that long. Let’s see….I’d think it’d be an interesting dinner with J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter’s book), Paulo Coelho (I love his book “The Alchemist”) and George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones). Another interesting dinner would be with some classics children’s book authors, like Ted Hughes (I’m a big fan of the Iron Giant) and Ronald Dahl.

What author inspires you the most and why?

Any author that makes me feel emotionally attached to his/her work inspires me. For example, George R.R. Martin’s books are masterpieces. He makes you care about all characters, their books makes you pour your whole heart into something that it doesn’t exist beyond those pages, and that’s what I would love to achieve. That’s what I truly believe that a story should do. Create characters so realistic (even a monster) that you wish they existed.

What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.?

That’s really hard. I try to have a discipline. But it is tough, especially when you have another day job. What I do it’s to have goals. I believe that if you don’t plan a goal in your life, it’s very difficult to achieve anything. It’s like a ship, you need to know where you are going or you can spend all the time adrift. So, I’m very concern about goals and I even decide my deadlines for when I want to accomplish them. But I don’t have routine of writing. One thing that I always do is that I don’t start to write, until I got the whole plot in my head.

What advice would you give parents on selecting the right books for their children to read?

Read reviews. Listen what other people think about that book and if you have the chance to read it first, that’d be great. So you can tell if it suitable for your kid.

What advice you would give to new writers?

Write. Just write. It doesn’t matter how good or bad it is. You can always fix it, but you have to have something to start from. And the more you write, the better you become. It’s like everything in life, the more you do it, and the better you are. This is my first book, but it’s not my first story and I can see that the more stories I create, the better I become.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

There is a motto that I believe and it always gives me strength. “Never give up, because if you don’t give up……..anything is possible”

Thank you for this interview.

Thank YOU

For so many people across the country, both young and old, one name comes to mind when they think about the reading of their childhood — Harper Lee.

To this day, on the eve of the 50th birthday “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Lee’s only novel lives on to fulfill its one purpose: to challenge society and one’s way of thinking a page at a time. http://abcnews.go.com/WN/50th-anniversary-famous-harper-lee-book-kill-mockingbird/story?id=11126933

About the Book: The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic.

Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior – to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos. Now with over 18 million copies in print and translated into forty languages, this regional story by a youngAlabama woman claims universal appeal. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.

There’s Just Something About a Boy by Jenny Lee Sulpizio and illustrated by Peg Lozier

About the Book: There’s Just Something About a Boy is a children’s keepsake picture book celebrating the special bond between a mother and her newborn son by depicting the love, laughter, and unparalleled adventure that will surely come from raising a little boy.

My Review: This is the second book by the author and what a great read. The author beautifully expresses the bond between a mother and her son. From seeing his image on the sonogram to graduating from school and starting a new future. She tells a story every mother with a son can relate to.

The illustrations by Peg Lozier are beautiful and colorful which helps to bring each pages of the story to life. There’s Just Something About a Boy is a great book to give as a gift to a first time parent.

Jenny Lee Sulpizio, M.S., is a wife, business owner, and mother of three fabulous kiddos residing in the beautiful state ofIdaho. In her free time (*enter audible laughing*), she enjoys writing about anything and everything under the sun, but especially loves to instruct, motivate, and guide other moms with practical advice, tips and a whole lot of comic relief in the process.

Jenny has authored two children’s picture books (Mommy Whispers, 2010 and There’s Just Something About a Boy, 2011), and has several Women’s Non-fiction WIP’s in her arsenal. To find out more about Jenny or to follow her blog, visit www.jennysulpizio.com

Author of There’s Something About a Boy

I want to thank you for being my guest here on Mymcbooks Blog

What is the last book you read? I am currently reading “Crazy Love,” by Francis Chan and loving it. With three young kiddos in the house, finding the time to read (and actually comprehend what is taking place in the book), is hard to do.

What was your favorite children’s book? “The Giving Tree,” by Shel Silverstein

What were your earliest memories of writing? I have always loved writing and enjoyed the creative process behind it. No matter what the topic may be, I think it’s an amazing way to creatively express one’s self.

Were you encouraged to write or was it something that came natural? I think a little of both.

Are you working on a new book? Always…

What inspired you to write There’s just Something About A Boy? After writing and releasing “Mommy Whispers,” for my daughter last year, I thought it only fair to express my feelings for my two young boys as well.

What is the most difficult part of writing? Revisions.

What do you do when you’re not writing or promoting your books? I am slightly compulsive about event planning and love to orchestrate new events at my church for all to learn from and enjoy.

How do you react to a bad review and have you ever suffered from writer’s block? Yes and yes. Bad reviews and rejection are just part of this whole crazy adventure. If anything, you realize that not everyone is going to love your work. Rather than focus on those negative thoughts, I love to relish the reviews where my work has truly blessed another.

Who are some of your favorite authors you would love to dine with? Jesus.

What author inspires you the most and why? See above. Enough said.

What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.? I am a “pantser,” which means I am not a disciplined writer. As much as I would love to be, most of my ideas are spontaneous and I just have to roll with it.

What do you hope that readers will take away from your book? The message of how much they are loved and adored by their mother (and father), forever, for always, and unconditionally.

What advice you would give to new writers? Just keep writing, creating, researching, and learning. Let rejection motivate you to write even more.

Thank you for this interview.

Poodle & Doodle by Donna J. Shepherd and illustrated by Jack Foster.

About the Book: Angel, a twelve-pound prissy poodle, is none too happy when Leah brings home Scruffy, a seventy-five pound clumsy Labradoodle. Why ever would Leah want another pet when she had the perfect dog already?

My Review: Angel couldn’t understand why Leah would bring home another dog. Her question was, “I’m a fancy poodle pup. Am I not dog enough?” She just could not understand why Leah needed a dog like Scruffy that gobble down his dinner while she takes small bites, or drink out of the toilet or roll around like a mutt in wet and weedy grass; this dog shows no doggie class at all (funny). But she discovers that there may be a reason for keeping him around after all.

Some children find it hard to accept change for example; they can feel overshadowed by a new friend or a new baby. But the lesson in this book is about friendship and how to adapt to change.

Whether you love dogs or not Poodle and Doodle is a cute story that children and adults will find funny. The beautiful illustration done by Jack Foster helps bring the book to life with its bright and bold colors. I highly recommend this book for you children home library and for classroom teaching.

Donna Shephard author of Poodle & Doodle.

I want to thank you for being my guest here on Mymcbooks Blog

Thank you for asking me!

What is the last book you read?

I’m reading “The Exceptional Life” by Stephen Arterburn and John Shore. Evidently, the dawn of 2012 sparked a renewed interest in improving myself.

What were your earliest memories of writing?

I can always remember reading, but not writing until high school. I began to fill notebooks with poetry about teenage angst. I even dared to show one poem to a couple of friends. They began to cry, and I realized how deeply writing can touch others. Then I got busy with singing, work, marriage, kids, and didn’t write again until the children were grown. I’m constantly encouraging writers – especially moms – to make time for writing. I regret not jotting down all the wonderful and funny things my children said and did. I have a good memory, but there’s nothing like writing in the moment.

Were you encouraged to write or was it something that came natural?

My high school English teacher encouraged me. I did compose a few songs in my twenties, but didn’t get back to writing until 2003. Once I started writing, it seemed as if a dam had burst, and I couldn’t stop. I’m blessed with supportive family and friends, who kept encouraging me – especially after I got a couple of rejections.

What was your favorite children’s book?

I don’t remember Mom reading to me that much when I was little. I am the eldest of five children, all born within ten years. That might explain it!

I do remember reading anything and everything I could get my hands on once I learned to read. I think I read all the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books the library had (yes, the original ones!).

What inspired you to write ‘Poodle and Doodle?’

I set up a home studio and started by providing voiceover for book trailers, and I’m now recording audio books. It has been an interesting and fun way to use my voice.

Who are some of your favorite authors you would love to dine with?

I would love to have dinner with Max Lucado. He is such a prolific writer, speaker, minister, and missionary. He wears many hats. I’d love to hear how he manages to do it all and do it so well. Many times, he works with co-authors, which is something I’ve yet to do, but I’m open to that possibility.

What author inspires you the most and why?

For my children’s writing, I’d say Shel Silverstein. When my son came home from school with a Shel Silverstein book, I read it with him, and we laughed and had such fun. I think it made an impression on him as well, because now he buys ME Shel Silverstein books. I love Silverstein’s sense of humor and wordplay. I may never be a ‘Shel’ but I have the same fun as I write for children.

How do you react to a bad review and have you ever suffered from writer’s block?

So far, I’ve been blessed with good reviews. One reviewer thought my rhythm was slightly off in one of my books, and that bothered me. I work for hours – no, make that days, and sometimes months, on my poetry. I analyze the story, the characters, each line, and then each word. But the reviewer still gave the book a positive review overall, so I couldn’t complain.

I’ve never suffered from writer’s block yet. Quite the contrary!

What do you hope that readers will take away from your book?

It thrills me when someone writes to me about how her children want my books read to them over and over. That’s a child’s greatest compliment. I received the most precious picture from a grandfather. His granddaughter dressed up like the little girl in “Poodle and Doodle.” She had two of her stuffed dogs at the table and was serving them tea.

I’m extremely blessed when I receive emails from readers inspired and encouraged by the devotions and articles.

What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.?

A writing friend, Mayra Calvani, emailed to ask if I’d like to be interviewed on her blog “Pets and Their Authors.” But she didn’t really want me to answer. She wanted to interview my dog! Mayra thought the answers were funny and asked why I hadn’t written about Sadie’s antics. I thought, “Why haven’t I?” and started writing. The book is written from my poodle’s point of view. I also write from Angel’s perspective on a blog called “Oodles of Fun.” I have coloring pages, videos, and fun stories.

Are you working on a new book?

The next book to be released is “Ava’s Secret Tea Party.” It is my first strictly ‘girly’ book and I’m having a delightful time setting up a blog with tea party recipes and decorations. The book has recipes and crafts included.

Another book, “Miss Emma Ant” is with the illustrator now about an ant that’s the lead architect for her colony and decides to quit her job. The underlying theme is we all (even ants!) have unique talents and as we work together, we can accomplish great things. I’ve written nonfiction for ‘grownups’ for several years, but now I’m venturing into fiction with a novelette called “Love Under the Bubble Wrap.”

What is the most difficult part of writing?

Finding time, of course, but my personal struggle is finding a singular focus. That’s one thing I have to say I’m lacking. I take multi-tasking seriously.

Tell us a little about Devotionals for Children.

My slogan for the Topsy Turvy Time site is “Life without Christ is Topsy Turvy.” There are so many things about God’s way that seem upside down and backward! God says when you give, you get. He says when you’re humble, He’ll lift you up. When Jesus came, He came as a servant, yet He’s our King. Because I had written a children’s book about a topsy-turvy land and I love to write devotions, it seemed natural to write devotions for children about God’s wonderful and unique way of loving us.

What do you do when you’re not writing or promoting your books?

I like to sing and speak for women’s meetings and conferences. I teach an adult class and play the piano at the church where my husband and I pastor.

My Google calendar comes in handy to keep me on track. I write self-imposed deadlines on it, and have reminders sent to my inbox. I write or market every day except Sunday. I’ve found that if I have a chunk of time, I can write several blog posts and schedule them to be published. I love that feature from Blogger.

What advice would you give parents on selecting the right books for their children to read?

When my children were little, we went to the library and checked out as many books as we could. Many times my kids surprised me with their choices. I read poetry, fiction, nonfiction, funny, quirky, and serious books. I mixed in books suggested for a slightly older age group to challenge my children. Now with the e-readers and growing supply of eBooks, parents have an endless supply of new material along with the classics.

What advice you would give to new writers?

In 2003, I sent in my first submission. Within a week, I met a woman who ran a group for writers online. When she found out I had just stepped my toe into the writing waters, she informed me that I should be prepared for a lot of rejection and disappointment. Thank God, that first submission was accepted. I think He knew I needed that push. I could have easily decided writing wasn’t worth trying had I adopted that same negative attitude. If you are passionate about your writing, you won’t let the naysayers or even a stack of rejections discourage you.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Write every day. Write about anything and everything. Soon, your unique voice will emerge. No one else in the entire world writes from your perspective. After you write, join a critique group. And then – submit. If you’re rejected, submit again!

I pray for inspiration. God is the Ultimate Creator and I believe we follow His leading when we are creative.

And I hope you’ll come visit Topsy Turvy Land soon!

http://www.topsyturvyland.com

Thank you for this interview.

Thank you for taking time to interview me. I enjoyed it, and hope something I’ve written will help and encourage your readers.

In My Mailbox is a great way for bloggers to socialize and network their blogs, it’s also a great way for bloggers to share upcoming releases!

Anyone can participate in IMM and you are not limited to only sharing books that arrive via your mailbox. You can also share books that you’ve bought or books that you’ve gotten at the library.

Real Bible Stories of God’s Princesses – Princess Stories by Carolyn Larsen

About the Book: Little princesses will love reading about the women of the Bible. They will learn about the loyalty of Ruth, the wisdom of Deborah, and the courage of Esther . . . and so much more.

Most important, girls will discover that they, too, are princesses—daughters of the King. As they look into these stories, they’ll learn to love God and to follow his Word.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the most special princess of all?
You, special princess, are the daughter of the King.
You’re more precious to him than any other thing!

Open this book and help your daughter find value and purpose in living as God’s little princess!

My Review: I loved reading the Princess Stories. Children love to dress up like the Disney Princess in the movies and wishing to be a princess. There is a great introduction to this book, “Have you ever wished you were a princess? The bible already tells us that we are God’s little princess.

This book has a collection of 29 women in the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testaments that are loyal, faithful, bravest, and kindest and many more. It follows the story of the princesses, from Eve to Rahab, from Deborah to Esther and from Anna to you, and the last chapter is all about you. You don’t have to be daring like Esther or wise like Ruth for God has chosen you and made you special, just the way you are. It gives a summary of each of the women in the bible and their character traits.

Each story starts with a princess and a scripture.

Eve the First Princess

Genesis1:26 – 2:25

And a rhyming verse.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall,

Who was the very first princess of all?

A long time ago, before your birth,

Eve was the very first woman on earth.”

These are great lessons for kids 4 -8 years to learn the stories of women of the bible and how to apply scripture to their own lives. It is great to know that we are all God’s daughters and so that makes us his special Princesses.
