Keepsake that Educates!

Book Review/Giveaway: A Rainbow of Birds. Ends April 19th

A Rainbow od Birds

A Rainbow of Birds by Janet Halfmann and illustrated by Jack Foster

About the Book: Birds have their legends just like people do, and baby birds love to hear the stories. Papa Cardinal, whose job it is to pass down bird ways to his chicks, tells them the story of how birds gave the world the rainbow. It’s a tale of fun and squabbles and magic! Suggested age range for readers: 3-8

My Review: Have you ever wondered about the rainbow in the sky, or how does the colors of the rainbow stay up high in the sky? Well, a rainbow of birds by author Janet Halfmann gives an insight.

While waiting for the summer rain to stop, Papa Cardinal tells his chicks a story about how birds get livelier after the summer rain and soar high in the sky. He went on to say how the cardinals flew from one end of the sky to the other, forming a band of beautiful bright red. Next in line are the robins with their orange breast, the yellow warblers, the parrots, the blue jays, the indigo buntings and the purple martins all lined up to form the rainbow of birds. The chicks were so excited to see the magic in the sky as the sun peek out of the sky.

This is a well written story by the author Janet Halfmann with bold vibrant color illustrations by Jack Foster. At the end of the story, Janet Halfmann included the rainbow facts and fun, the rainbow’s name, rainbow stories, how to make a rainbow outdoors/indoors and many more. I love that the book is full of fun and imagination for kids. I highly recommend this book for classroom reading.

  1. Love the cover and the rainbow. We have had a few bird nests in our yard and the kids have been excited because we have been able to see the birds hatch and then fly away. Very precious to see and share. This book is something that my daughter could read to her brother. I enjoyed your review Ella, it brings the book alive.

    • Wow, that’s such a great experience to be able to see the birds hatch. I’m always hoping a bird will lay its eggs where we can watch them. Happy Reading to All!

  2. How interesting to have the legend about rainbows told from the birds’ point of view! This is a clever way to get children interested in reading the book. The cover is bright and colorful, too!

    • Janice, thanks so much for the nice comments. At the time I wrote the book, I was doing a lot of research about birds and legends for other projects, and this book grew out of that, plus a host of lively birds right after a rain.

  3. Right now we have a Bald Eagle on the other side of town who laid three eggs in her nest. One was hatched on Friday and another one is due to hatch tomorrow. I’ve been watching it on the webcam that are news channel has up. It’s really interesting. She is so gentle with the new baby and with the other two eggs. I hope they all survive. My grandson is becoming more interested in birds. I know he would love this story. Thank you for the giveaway!

  6. We (the grandkids & I) have loved every Janet Halfmann book we’ve read, and we have several in our home library. Having the different types of birds form the different colors of the rainbow is an interesting bird fable.
We had morning doves lay eggs in our bedroom window boxes – their cooing is very loud when it is just feet from where you are sleeping.

    • Your comment sure made my day! It give me goosebumps to think kids (and adults) are having fun reading my books! I love morning doves, but I must say I would hope they wouldn’t lay their eggs too close to our bedroom window. We actually often have to close our bedroom window in the morning because birds love to sing in the nearby pine tree.

  9. Right now, it’s springtime. We’re looking for rainbows. Based only on the review above and the illustration, it makes me miss rainbows. Maybe it’s just me, but when I see the birds at the end of an arc on their way down, it reminds me of Angry Birds. I’m almost looking for the piggies and the wood blocks to demolish.
