Keepsake that Educates!

Book Review/Giveaway: Hockey Agony. Ends October 5th

Hockey Agony

Hockey Agony written by Donna McDine. Illustrated by Julie Hammond

About the Book: Peer Pressure and Honesty many times go hand-in-hand.  What is Larry to do when his teammate asks him to cheat when he is given the responsibility to run the clock during the big hockey game?  Outwardly, it may seem he will follow suit, but his conscious tells him otherwise at the moment of truth. http://www.donnamcdine.com/donnasbooks.html

My Review: Larry is a Hockey player for his school team. Unfortunately, he is unable to play due to a broken leg. Now he has to sit and watch his team play against Peal River without him, he wasn’t happy at all. But his coach decided to give him the responsibility of being in the score box to run the clock. Larry wasn’t pleased and by the tone in his voice his coach wasn’t pleased with his attitude and lack of respect, but he saw potential in Larry. So Larry decided to run the clock during the game bad enough he couldn’t play now he has to sit with the opposite team player to run the clock.

When Larry’s teammate Peter heard that Larry will be the clock runner for Friday’s game he tries to convince Larry to shave a few seconds off the clock if they get a penalty to ensure a win for their team, Larry felt that was cheating. But will he shave off a few seconds to save his team?

This book addresses attitude, respect, peer pressure, discipline, cheating and honesty. I highly recommend this book.

  1. I haven’t seen this one before. My son plays hockey for his local club and often needs to to display good character when others around him do not. This sounds like a good reinforcer for him

  2. This sounds like it has a good message, my little brother could learn a thing or two from this he has a pretty bad attitude when he doesn’t get his way and he’s always hamming up injuries for attention then suddenly he’s fine at game time, might be good for him to read the story of a boy who was really hurt and has to sit out.

  4. This sounds like a great read for my 8 year old, sport loving grandson who gets frustrated to put it mildly when things don’t go as he wants. :)
Thanks for featuring this book. I think it would be a perfect read for him.

  5. I look forward to finding out how Larry deals with peer pressure and if he will cheat to help his team win. I hope he does the right thing and runs the clock fairly.
