Book Review & Giveaway: Star of the Sea: A Day in the Life of a Starfish by Janet Halfmann
With the ocean her home, an ochre sea star hunts for her morning meal. She folds over her rays and grips the rocky shore with sticky feet as she feasts on shellfish. When she takes too long, the tide flows back without her and Sea Star becomes easy prey. But she is built to survive and eventually makes her way back to the sea, although with one less ray than before. This inspiring story informs young children about the important role of a small but fascinating sea creature.
My Review: The ochre sea star is a common starfish of the Pacific coast. After falling victim to a seagull’s attack, Sea Star was able to regenerate to hunt again. Janet Halfmann goes on to explain how sea stars feeds mainly on mussels. but will also feed on barnacles, snails, limpets, and chitons when mussels are absent. They eat by extending their stomach into their prey. When falling prey to other sea animal she is able to do a circus acrobat and somersaults away. A bright and wonderful color illustration by Joan Paley and a 5 star rating for Star of the Sea. I highly recommend this book for classroom teaching.

This looks like a great book. My little one is so interested in animals.

We live only 11/2 hours from the beach but sadly some of my kinderkids have never been! We used to be able to go on a field trip to the ocean but that’s no longer allowed. This book would be a wonderful addition to our sea life unit. Sea stars always fascinate my students (and amaze me!)

Our library’s summer reading program (Amazing Tales) is going to include Sea Tales about creatures that live in the ocean. This sounds like a wonderful book to include.

Ella, thanks for the great review of my book and for hosting this giveaway. I love to read the comments. I got to touch an ochre sea star at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. It was so interesting to check out its tube feet, the tiny hole on the top where the water goes in, its spines! Happy Reading to All!
This would be a great book to show my students about perseverance!

What a great way for children to learn about a specific creature of the sea. I can see many more creatures of the sea in this authors future.

We have Janet’s book Pelican’s Catch & it is a favorite. I know my grandkids would enjoy learning about sea life in the same manner as they learned about the pelican.

The book sounds interesting. My son loves stories about the sea. We live by the Tennessee River so he thinks Ocean and Ocean life are so different.

I think stories like this, that personalize even the smallest sea creatures, can be helpful in helping children understand how unique, resilient and important even the littlest of God’s creatures are.
I live near the beach and would love to win this for my little friend, Christopher!
My granddaughter would so enjoy this book.
